Choosing a dog is a 10-15 year commitment. The right breed makes it joyful; the wrong one makes it stressful. Here's how to choose wisely.
Consider Your Living Space
Apartment: Small, low-energy breeds like French Bulldogs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and Shih Tzus. Avoid high-energy breeds like Huskies or Australian Shepherds.
House with yard: Medium to large breeds work well. Golden Retrievers, Labradors, and Beagles thrive with outdoor space.
Match Your Energy Level
Active/Runner: Huskies, Australian Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers. These breeds need 1-2 hours of exercise daily.
Moderate: Golden Retrievers, Beagles, Corgis. A daily walk and some playtime is enough.
Low-key: Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Shih Tzus. Short walks and couch time.
Think About Allergies
If anyone in your household has allergies, consider hypoallergenic breeds: Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Miniature Schnauzers, Shih Tzus. No dog is 100% hypoallergenic, but these shed very little.
Family Situation
Young kids: Patient, gentle breeds โ Golden Retrievers, Labradors, Beagles, Cavaliers. Avoid tiny breeds that can be injured by toddlers.
Seniors: Calm, low-maintenance breeds โ Cavalier King Charles, Shih Tzu, French Bulldog.
